The Athenaeum of Brussels was established following the organic regulations on higher education in the Southern Netherlands of 25 September 1816. The athenea's curriculum was much broader than that of the municipal schools, and included public lectures on scientific topics. The institutions thus aimed to spread the knowledge and sense of science among the different classes of society.
