As part of the Powder to the people exhibition, Professor Joris Vandendriessche offers an insight into the history of nervous disorders since the late nineteenth century. With the wider accessibility of medication in the twentieth century came a new framing of illness and health. Aspirin, drinks and syrups, nerve powders and ointments promised solutions for “overstressed” housewives and workers, “women’s illnesses,” headaches and migraines, and the ailments of modern life.

Students Camille Ramon and Hanne Bamps will share the results of their master’s research on the perspective of the patient-user. They will discuss the (sometimes desperate) letters that customers wrote to Pharmacy Tuypens in the post-war period, and how oral history can provide insight into the changing experiences of people living with migraine.
