A joint project between the SHOC Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Department of History at the University of Antwerp is looking for two PhD candidates to conduct research on the history of midwives in Belgium and the Belgian Congo.
The project aims to generate new insights into the enduring importance of midwives in reproductive care in Belgium and the Belgian Congo between 1908 and 1960. Although women around the world handled the vast majority of deliveries and combined various reproductive care roles well into the twentieth century, a comprehensive history of their diverse practices and functions has yet to be written.
Deadline is 1 June 2026. More information can be found on the websites of the VUB and the University of Antwerp.
