The prize is named after Belgian businessman and science patron Emile Francqui. The prize is awarded by the Francqui Foundation to a Belgian who has made a significant contribution to science whose value enhances the prestige of Belgium. The age limit is 50 years; the prize is therefore not intended to crown a scientific career but to encourage (relatively) young scientists. The Prize is reserved, according to an annual rotation, for the following groups of sciences, in the order indicated below :

  • Exact sciences
  • Human sciences
  • Biological and Medical sciences

A candidate may not be nominated again except after a three-year term. The jury is composed exclusively of foreign scientists who are not attached to a Belgian scientific institution or university at the time of the nomination of the candidates and the award of the Prize.
