Mogenet, Joseph (1913-1980)

Classical Philologist and historian of science at the university of Leuven. He was born in Melreux in Belgian Luxembourg on 26 February 1913 and died on 18 February 1980.

Biography

Mogenet went to secondary school in La Louvière. He went to Leuven to study philosophy and letters and was ordained a priest in 1935. In 1938 he obtained his licentiate and started working on his doctorate under the supervision of Adolphe Rome. His studies were interrupted by the second world war, during which he was part of the resistance, got captured twice and was nearly executed before being saved by the Americans. He defended his doctorate in 1947. After the Second World War Mogenet also got into contact with Georges Sarton and together with his old mentor Rome they took over the editing of the science magazine Osiris from Sarton. He became a professor in 1951 and full professor in 1957 at the university of Leuven. After the scission he moved to Louvain-La-Neuve. He died peacefully on the 18th of February 1980.
