Les méridiennes de Quetelet

Le 5 mai 1835 fut un jour crucial dans l'histoire de la Belgique : le premier voyage en train en Belgique, de Bruxelles à Malines. Plus encore, le premier voyage en train sur le continent européen ! Ce voyage a marqué le début d'un grand projet visant à égaliser, pour la première fois, les « fuseaux horaires » et à mettre fin aux petites différences de temps entre les villes et les villages de Belgique. Ce projet était devenu urgent car la construction du chemin de fer belge nécessitait un fuseau horaire national uniforme afin que les trains puissent circuler à l'heure. Et, plus important encore, pour réduire le risque de collision entre les trains. En 1836, le gouvernement belge a mis sur pied un vaste projet pour installer des lunettes méridiennes et des méridiennes à différents endroits du pays. Il confie l'installation de ces mini-observatoires au scientifique renommé Adolphe Quetelet. Pour en savoir plus, cliquez sur le lien suivant.
